Chow mein, or “stir-fry noodles” in literal translation, is one of my favourite Chinese dishes to eat and to make because it’s so fast, filled with flavour, and just a great idea for lunch! Since it is fall and fall is all about Turkey, I wanted to celebrate the season with a little twist to the classic Chow mein style.  So today, I am going to be using Lilydale® Sweet Mesquite Turkey Breast Roast again (but this time I got a thicker cut from the deli) to help add a little more character to your lunch.

A Twist on a Tradition

Chow mein was a big part of my childhood (as my parents owned a Chinese restaurant) and making this dish always brings back a lot of memories of that time in our lives. Not only does it evoke special memories from the past but I also love noodles, so I often make Chow mein for the whole family and they absolutely love it. This popular Chinese dish is made with egg noodles and stir-fried veggies with your choice of proteins such as chicken, beef, pork, or seafood either on its own or even combined together. What I love about chow mein is that not only does it taste fantastic but it is a flexible dish that is practical and anyone can make it and make it delicious. With minimal clean-up, Chow mein can be made in one pan (1) or wok and is a fast and easy solution for lunch. So if you are a busy parent looking to revamp your routine, I encourage you to try out this recipe because it is a saviour for all lunchtime woes.

Recipe:

Turkey Chowmein with Lilydale® Sweet Mesquite Turkey Breast Roast

Time: 30 mins roughly

Serving 3 people

Sauce

½ cup of soya sauce

½ tbsp of mirin

1 tsp of Chili garlic paste

½ tsp of Chili flakes

¼ tsp of garlic, onion, ginger powder

¼ fish sauce or anchovy sauce

Dash of five-spice powder

2 tbsp of oyster or hoisin sauce

2 tbsp Sesame seed (optional)

Ingredients

Egg noodles (half pack)

¼ cup of snow peas

½ cup of thinly sliced celery

1 bell pepper

½ cup of shredded carrots

1/2 cup of sliced Lilydale® Sweet Mesquite Turkey Breast Roast

½ cup of sliced onions and chopped green onions

How to Make

The bulk of your cooking time will be prep because the cooking is actually very fast and you will be done in no time.  Start by cutting all your desired veggies and set them aside.  Then cut Lilydale® Sweet Mesquite Turkey Breast Roastinto thick short strips.  Now, that all of your ingredients are prepped and ready to go follow the directions on the packaging and boil the noodles.  I personally like to taste as I go with everything and that is why I love Chinese cooking because it doesn’t have to be perfect – you can add more, use different ingredients, and even different cooking methods, and generally, it will all work out great! It’s a pretty full-proof dish to make but I do suggest that you can go easy on pouring the sauce at first to make sure you are satisfied with the amount of saltiness.  After the noodles are done, rinsed, and set aside we can start with making the sauce which is key for the noodles. Next is the fun part—start by sautéing the Turkey and onions to give the wok a great aroma for the rest of the dish to coat. After Turkey is cooked to a nice brown (and it’s ok with a little dark edge) you can stir fry the veggies.  I suggest stir-frying the vegetables individually but if you are short on time it’s ok to do it all at once! Finally, add in the noodles and cook for a minute adding the veggies and turkey too. Lastly, pour the sauce little by little, tasting as you go until you are satisfied with the flavor.

An Appetizing Fall Treat

And there you go, it’s fast, easy, and filled with great aromas and colours and a great idea for your fall dinners coming up.  This dish is not only delectable but also healthy with tons of veggies and good protein from the nitrate-free and Canadian farm-raised turkey at Lilydale.  Not to mention the smoky and sweet from the turkey meat makes this dish that much more appetizing. I highly suggest you try this classic dish with a twist I am sure your whole family will enjoy it!
